But, sometimes, what the girl wants (”Put a microphone on my picture!”) the girl gets. And so. So, so, so…

Thoughts on Twitter…and what comes next

I’ve been asked a number of times recently about “Twitter.” And I have to admit that maybe this is due to age, but I don’t quite see the point - for two reasons:

  1. I just heard on NPR this morning that our social groups are getting smaller and smaller. So with fewer friends and acquaintances, why do we need these tools to tell them more and more about what it is were doing, minute by minute?
  2. And speaking of those minute by minute updates…I can’t seem to scrape up enough time to live/write about my own life, let alone read about yours. For example, a random Twitter post: “Me gonna bag myself the 2.0.1 upgrade when I get back to the ranch.” Bwuh-huh? Oh - wait. iPhone 2.0.1 update? Yeah, maybe I should stop reading random “twits” and get that update too.

So there you go. See what I mean?

It strikes me that there is an indirect correlation between the amount of meaningful communication and the ease and speed at which that communication can be produced. (Also the number of people who can, conceivably, read see, read or hear said communication.)

Think about the number of rock paintings. Versus the number of papyrus scrolls. Versus the number of books which rolled off the Gutenberg press. Versus the number of newspapers printed. Versus the number of blogs and blog postings. Versus the number of “tweets.”

I think the next logical step is some sort of camera/microphone/gps/web server solution that a user would wear that could provide real time location data, pictures, and sound available to anyone with an internet connection…and absolutely nothing more meaningful to do.
